My Philosophy
Growing up, I was never sure what I wanted to do or what I would even be good at. One thing I did know was that I wanted to dig deeper than the surface level of things. This was around the same time I discovered Photoshop and learned to use it, and I fell in love with the process of design. At first, I thought I wanted to go into advertising, but then I realized that I wanted to learn the reasons behind why and how certain advertisements are made. This is how I discovered Marketing and Communications, and this is my journey thus far.
In my senior year of High School, instead of taking a relaxed year, I decided to apply to a program called New Visions, which would take place for half of the school day at my local BOCES. I was ecstatic to learn I had been accepted into the Business Academy and did all I could to prepare myself for college applications. During the course of this Academy, we created a Student-run business, and I was voted by my peers to be their Team Lead for Marketing. This was my first big chance to dive deep into social media branding, and I loved creating posts for our company and promoting them. I even loved tracking the insights from the posts!
Fast forward to the end of the school year, I had dreams of coming to Syracuse, but did not think it was financially possible for me. I took a shot in the dark and applied for a Scholarship through Junior Achievement, a non-profit who I had worked under in New Visions. I had an interview shortly after applying and thought it went well but kept thinking there was no way they would choose me over other applicants. After a couple of weeks of anxiously waiting for the decision, I got the email that I was selected to receive the 2020 Junior Achievement and Syracuse University Scholarship, which awards full tuition for 4 years. I had never been more proud of myself, both of my parents cried along with me and before I knew it, I was preparing to head off to my dream school.
The start of my journey at Syracuse was rough, it was the height of Covid, and I was not sure if CRS would aid me in a future Marketing career. My first semester I was determined to switch majors and was in contact with people to do so. My mindset all changed during a CRS Alumni presentation in my CRS 100 course. There were multiple Alumni in different types of Marketing fields, and I realized how I could use CRS as an asset to my future. Instead of switching majors, I used CRS to develop and learn communication skills crucial to a future workplace and added minors in Marketing and Public Communication Studies for more specified industry learning. The knowledge I have gained thus far has helped me to secure multiple internships in Sales, Marketing, and Social Media, and I now have professional experience in the field I want to have a career in.
As a recent graduate now, I would have never expected my journey at Syracuse to turn out as perfectly as it has, and I am thankful for all the Faculty and Staff who have aided me along the way. I went from being anxious about my program being right for me to being confident in my areas of study and constantly searching for courses I can add to to expand my knowledge. Working in the Marketing Industry is a dream for me, and I know that the knowledge I have gained will propel me to greatness in my future career.
